Agency: Sky Creative Agency
Client: Sky Atlantic
Role: Campaign Creative Lead
Following the lead of HBO’s campaign ‘Chaos Takes Control’, we were tasked with getting passionate Sky customers excited for the new series of Westworld by making them a part of the story.
Our answer was ‘The Glitch’, a technological infection that starts in the show and has spread to Sky Atlantic. We started by disrupting all of Sky Atlantic’s “channel furniture”, distorting and glitching the channel’s idents, bumpers and even promos for other shows to reveal hidden Westworld messages and content as well as a 7-day countdown to the airdate. Over the course of two weeks, these glitches expanded and became full trails and promos for the new season - Chaos Taking Control.
Hidden in all of our content were lines of ‘computer code’ that, that quick-witted viewers realised they could pause using their Sky remote to reveal a phone number.
If called, they received an exclusive message from lead character Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood), who dropped further hints to the direction Season 2 would take.
Over 300 people called, and a 600 comment discussion sprung up online amongst our bullseye demographic – the users of Reddit.
All customers also received emails from Delos, the fictional corporation responsible for the robotic hosts. These emails appeared as real destination ads, and were also riddled with glitches, indicating that something was very wrong at Westworld.
We also created a special ‘slowmercial’ - 10s ads designed with little movement, to land messaging with the people who fast-forward through the ads using their Sky Remote. Like me.
